Description:
Writing 2 [Multilingual Learner] continues the work of Writing 1 [Multilingual Learner] by strengthening students' ability to write, read and engage in discussion in college-level English. Students practice literary and visual analysis, and they engage in research and analytic essay writing. Particular attention is paid to the needs of English Language Learners in the areas of grammar and vocabulary development. From Lord of the Rings, to Harry Potter, to Game of Thrones and the Witcher, to countless videogames, graphic novels and TV shows, Fantasy has never been more popular. Is Fantasy just a means to avoid dealing with the actual world and actual problems, or can the literature of the fantastic speak to (and even critique) the "real" world? In this class we'll look at works of fantasy from many cultures and time periods, focusing on short stories, film and comics as we explore what happens when imagination leaves the shores of the real and explores the fantastic and the unknown.
