Description:
Writing 2 continues the work begun in Writing 1 on strengthening students' ability to write, read and discuss at the college level, with emphasis on literary and visual analysis, and research and argumentation skills. The course will revolve around a specific theme selected by the instructor, in this case, "citizenship". What binds people together as a country? As a smaller community? What is the role of a “good citizen” in these contexts? How important is oath-taking? Voting? When do good citizens uphold the ideals of their community? When do they tear them down and reinvent those ideals? In the first half of the course, we will explore “citizenship” from a variety of perspectives, including Mia Birdsong, Eric Liu and Thich Nhat Hanh. We will also engage in active and creative “get out the vote” activities related to the Nov. 8 election and CCA’s Creative Citizens in Action initiative. Through research, discussion and consensus building, we will develop our own shared set of guidelines for being “a good citizen.” In the second part of the course, we will engage in, explore and critique a multitude of organizations and movements through the lens of our “good citizen” guidelines.
