Description:
We're obsessed with time, but what is it exactly? People have grappled with the nature of time throughout the ages. "What then is time?" St. Augustine asked. "Provided no one asks me, I know. If I try to explain it, I do not know." In this course, we will investigate the subjective experience of time through empirical observations and close readings of a variety of texts, including world literature and philosophy. You will develop your own evidence-based arguments in short weekly assignments, one personal essay, and two formal essays. Other time-based art forms like film, performance art, and music will provide further points of comparison for your arguments. The course will culminate with a time-based project in the media of your choice.
