Description:
Writing 2 continues the work begun in Writing 1 on strengthening students'
ability to write, read and discuss at the college level, with emphasis on literary and visual analysis, andresearch and argumentation skills. The course will revolve around a specific theme selected by the
instructor. This course will investigate the stories and storytellers who are erased, underrepresented, or
silen(t)(ced) in media, art, and literature. We will examine and analyze literary and rhetorical elements
in order to gain an understanding of the power of language and communication, and who holds that
power in our society. You will write essays pertaining to the course theme and develop the skill of
presenting a cogent argument backed up with supporting evidence from primary and secondary
sources. You will also have the opportunity to research and write your own version of a missing story,
using a creative medium of your choosing. This class will be a survey of San Francisco writing, art and film from the days of Mark Twain and Gertrude Atherton, up until the present day. San Francisco, the California city where we will be studying often figures in American and world literature as the end of the world, the terminus point, “Land’s End.” The extraordinary pressure behind such designations has led over the years to an explosion of amazing art work, and our class will look at a lot of it, much of it in memoir form. Writers we may examine include . Our work with California writing will be supplemented by colorful canvas and Hollywood curiosity, and I hope to bring in guest speakers to fire your imaginations.
