Description:

Writing 2 continues the work begun in Writing 1 on strengthening students' ability to write, read and discuss at the college level, with emphasis on literary and visual analysis, and research and argumentation skills. The course will revolve around a specific theme selected by the instructor.
Stories organize our perception of the world and give meaning to our experiences. We tell personal stories to create ourselves and forge bonds with others. But stories are also collective, creating cultural narratives that determine how we understand the past or imagine the future. In this class, we will explore how dominant cultural narratives constrain our ability to translate our experiences into stories. Drawing upon Critical Race Theory, we will practice the rhetorics and genres of “counter-storytelling,” including narrated dialogue, fantasy/allegory, and autobiographic reflection as a means to challenge the dominant narratives that limit our ability to imagine other words and worlds.
