Description:
Seeing “things” we do not quite understand or make immediate sense of is part of the human experience. Art and literature, since they deal directly with human consciousness and perception of the world, are filled with narratives that detail the encounters with the strange and the eerie: Horror, Fantasy, Magical Realism, and Weird literature are filled with odd, supernatural, and disturbing examples of the strange. This class will examine how writers and artists read and represent the weird and the eerie in order to make sense of the mystery of otherness.
