Description:
Writing 2 continues the work begun in Writing 1 on strengthening students' ability to write, read and discuss at the college level, with emphasis on literary and visual analysis, and research and argumentation skills. The course will revolve around a specific theme selected by the instructor.Zeitgeist is defined as the “spirit of the times,” the cultural, intellectual, ethical, spiritual, political climate where the creative writer or artist is working, influenced by it and contributing to it in a reciprocal loop. This class will examine a selection of readings, and practice writing in a variety of nonfiction and imaginative forms to develop skills of observation and description, critical thinking and vocabulary, and a sense of your stance about the state of the world and your potential contributions to the historical moment.Writing 2 has several goals. One is to introduce you to the pleasures, contexts, and formal strategies of literary texts, including travel stories, personal essays, poetry, short fiction, book reviews, and hybrid forms. Another is to continue the work begun in Writing 1 to develop your ability to think critically, know your own point of view, and write clearly in a voice that sounds like yours. In addition, this section of Writing 2 practices the skills of speaking and listening, reading and responding, research and presentation of findings, visual and information literacy.
