Genre fiction can transport readers to a past that never was, complete with zeppelins, magic and dinosaurs, or a future where aliens brush shoulders with our cyborg children, or a now concealing unspeakable horrors we cannot imagine without shuddering. In this class, we’ll learn how to write science fiction, fantasy and horror, as well as great prose, characters we care about, worlds we want to get lost in, and plots that grip and don’t let go. We’ll explore the history and critical languages of genre fiction, do all sorts of generative writing and revision exercises, and become better readers, writers and critics of each other’s work.Texts:
