Description:
Ever since Herodotus wrote his influential Histories about the charged encounters between ancient Greeks and Persians, the human fascination with other peoples, customs, and lands has only increased, and the literature of travel has exploded. This class will explore some of the greatest of this travel and adventure writing, most of it written prior to 1850. By reading various genres of work including poetry, fiction, and non-fiction, we will explore how previous writers have viewed the landscape, interacted with the "other," experienced self-transformation, and influenced entire generations of readers and thinkers who were unable to travel themselves. Supplementary materials including films, visual art, and scholarly articles will provide a multi-faceted view of the authors, their work, and the people and places they describe.
