The Practical Prep workshops are a series where students will learn hands-on art installation skills. Our mission is to teach students practical skills they will need as practicing artists, curators, and preparators outside of CCA, so that all students feel empowered to problem-solve specific installation concerns around their work and create displays and exhibitions in, and outside of traditional institutions.

The main four-part workshop series will start by developing comfort through experience with common tools and equipment used for install and deinstall and will build to the final workshop, where participants will work together to install a complete and cohesive exhibition in the Hooper Atrium.

Participants will be asked to include a work in the Practical Prep Exhibition that will be installed during Workshop 4 on November 2nd. There will be a mini-reception after Workshop 4 from 5—6 where participants will be able to relax and celebrate their labor. Deinstall will be held on Friday, November 4th, from 3—6 PM. Deinstall will not be a formal workshop, but it will be another chance to practice what you have learned.

In addition to the workshop series, an intensive will be held at the CCA Dogpatch MFA Studios on October 5th from 11 AM—3 PM (the week before Workshop 1). This install/desintall intensive will be a crash course covering most of the content covered in the four-part series.

These workshops are open to all students, faculty, and staff. We ask you to sign up so that we can be as prepared as possible, but drop-ins are welcome. While each workshop in the four-part series is meant to build off the last and we encourage you to attend all of them, it is okay if you can't (we will do our best to fill you in).
