Julia Parker (Coast Miwok/Kashaya Pomo) is one of the preeminent Native American basket makers of California and respected elder of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. As a carrier of indigenous knowledge, Julia demonstrated basketry as a Cultural Specialist at the Yosemite Museum for over five decades and has traveled nationally and internationally to share her knowledge with Natives and non-Natives alike. Her work has been featured in numerous articles, books, exhibitions, and films and has been honored by multiple institutions, including CCA, which awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2006. A student of the great basket weavers of the twentieth century, Julia stands in a long lineage of makers with her daughter Lucy Parker and granddaughter Ursula Jones following in her footsteps. The Parkers will discuss their practice, the challenges they face, and their mission to maintain a millennia-old tradition.
