Description:

Craft workshops are technical or thematic studio courses that provide opportunities for students to work in an interdisciplinary setting. These courses will have an emphasis on making and contextualizing processes within broad Craft discussions. Concepts and strategies such as expert skill, material study and knowledge, and DIY approaches will be introduced. Advanced workshops will extend these dialogues and practices to economic, political and social contexts. Individual sections will feature readings, slide lectures, videos, gallery and museum visits and other material.Special Techniques courses description:The Special Techniques courses help students to deepen their understanding of a specific subject matter or technique related to the field of Metalsmithing and Jewelry. Students investigate and practice the technique or subject through iterations, investigation, research, and critical discussion. The Jewelry/Metal Arts program offers four different Special Technique courses which rotate every other year and by demand. These courses include Casting, Color on Metal, Holloware, and Production. Casting Section Description: Learn true alchemy by transforming combustible materials into metal! In this course you will learn to make small metal objects and jewelry through numerous casting techniques. You will be guided through several methods to create and prepare your object for an invested flask. Then you will burn out the original leaving only an impression and by either pouring, spinning, or vacuuming molten metal intro the mold, you will transform that impression into a copy of the original. Original objects for the flasks can be carved or built from wax or can be done from a found object of organic or plastic material. In addition, you may be able to make molds for producing multiples. And the Jewelry & Metal Arts program encourages the use of a jewelry specific 3 D printer to print CAD models that can be invested for casting. Students will learn about metal alloys, recycling metals, and environmentally conscious practices for metalsmithing. Students in this class will be shown a comprehensive overview of the world of small metal casting techniques. Students in this class will be shown a comprehensive survey of the world of small metal casting techniques. This class can fulfill one of the two Special Technique course requirements for Jewelry & Metal Arts majors, fulfill an elective option for any student at CCA including JMA majors, or a Craft Workshop requirement. There are no prerequisites for this course, but Intro to Jewelry & Metal Arts is recommended.
