Description:
This studio will identify areas of radical redesign of traditional design process starting with the inquiry of how issues of diversity such as race, gender and culture influence the traditional design process. Through readings and guest speakers, students will investigate those who have historically been excluded from design, with a focus on underrepresented communities. Students will research case studies and design processes such as Human Centered Design, Design thinking, Social Impact design, and Creative Placemaking. Engaging in workshops and hands-on, collaborative projects, students will understand design approaches such as community engagement and participatory design, to propose alternate methods of what designing with, instead of for, might look like while acknowledging the narratives that impact our personal processes.
