Description:
This class will consider the issues of gentrification and urban displacement in a historical, social and political-economic context. Questions we will explore include: What are the spatial and social consequences of globalization and neo-liberalism on US cities? In what ways has gentrification become a global issue? What is the relationship between the abandonment and deindustrialization of some urban areas and the rise of the “information city” and new kinds of company towns in regions like the SF Bay Area? In what ways is urban space gendered and racialized and how is this connected to new forms of policing and struggles over public space. What is the “Right to the City” and what effect does gentrification and displacement have on struggles for municipal democracy and “spatial justice”?
