Description:
The realm of sports and fitness is truly a team effort of players, makers, and thinkers. This interdisciplinary studio course will investigate sports and fitness as an arena for art, design, architecture, and performance. Students will look to sources in art history, pop culture, and science to survey how sports and fitness are given physical form and media presence in everything from TV graphics to shoe design. The course includes weekly in-class warm-ups and exercise sessions, readings, lectures, screenings, discussions, tournaments and group project-development. Site visits to gymnasiums, yoga studios, fields, playgrounds, etc, and guest lectures from practitioners working with related themes will be included. The course will consider the design of uniforms, gym architecture, group dynamics and team building, and roles of gender and race in the making of objects and images within physical culture. Over the semester, student teams will develop objects, actions, uniforms, and collaborative endeavors that acknowledge the narratives and cultural/ physical implications of the field of fitness, competition and exercise. Final works will be presented to the public on nearby sports fields and in an exhibition at a related venue.
