Cultural Competence Commitments + Goals

These commitments, outcomes, approaches and indicators were developed over the course of two years from 2018 to 2020 by the Diversity , Equity, Inclusion, Belonging Task Force. We consider it a work in progress.

We are committed to establishing an awareness, acknowledgement, and respect for the multiplicity of identities and cultural backgrounds of all individuals on our campus.

We are committed to learning about ourselves as individuals and the roles of our implicit biases and privilege.

We are committed to understanding the institutional implications of structures and systems that have resulted in privilege for some and oppression for most.

Articulate the value/benefits of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in work and school

Demonstrate willingness to investigate one’s own biases and take steps to reduce their impact in the workplace

Demonstrate commitment to continuous growth in cultural literacy

The historical disenfranchisement of a variety of human groups both in the US and globally

Privilege and structural and systemic power in society

Accessible resources for D&I initiatives

Completion rate for DiversityEdu (staff, faculty, students)

Participation in D&I workshops

Curiosity about ourselves and others, and the ways our current systems harm or benefit us and others

High survey results on measures of staff/student/faculty sense of belonging

Students give faculty high and/or improved ratings on class evaluation questions pertaining to inclusive classroom open to all perspectives

Number of staff/faculty workshops, grants, professional development opportunities, programs offered to ensure colleagues from all backgrounds feel supported and invested in
