Duo Security Two-Factor Authentication

Last updated on Feb 08, 2023

Duo multi-factor authentication is required for all CCA staff, faculty, and–as of March 1, 2023–students. Duo provides an additional level of security by requiring users to authenticate logins from another registered device.

Get started

  1. Go to the Duo for CCA Opt-in Page, and follow the prompts to enroll with your CCA account
  2. Download the Duo App for your mobile device (recommended)
  3. The next time you attempt to use an SSO-protected application, enter your CCA credentials and follow the steps as outlined in Duo's self-enrollment documentation to complete Duo setup

What devices are supported for two-factor authentication?

Duo works with any smartphone, mobile phone, or desk phone. And if you have a newer Apple laptop with a Touch Bar, you can configure Duo to use Touch ID.

Phone

Even though Duo works with any mobile or desk phone, we recommend using an iOS or Android smartphone as your second factor since almost everyone already has one with them at all times and the Duo Mobile app provides the fastest and most secure authentication.

Phone types and authentication methods

All phones support Duo using a phone call. All mobile phone can accept a text. And iOS and Android devices can use the Duo mobile app.

MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with a Touch ID button

The Touch ID button on newer Apple laptops with a Touch Bar can be set up as a second factor for use with Google Chrome. Instructions for setting up and using Touch ID with Duo

You can even set up more than one device so you have a back up.

What is two-factor authentication, and why do we need it?

Two-factor authentication is one of the best ways to protect against remote attacks such as phishing, credential exploitation and other attempts to takeover your accounts.

Two-factor authentication strengthens access security by requiring two methods (also referred to as factors) to verify your identity. These factors can include something you know - like a username and password, plus something you have - like a smartphone app to approve authentication requests.

For more information about two-factor authentication, we recommend watching the video below.

What is Duo Mobile?

Duo Mobile is Duo Security’s free app that allows you to quickly and easily approve a second-factor authentication request with one tap. With Duo Mobile, there is no need to manually enter a second code. Just one tap to authenticate right on your mobile device.

If you choose, Duo two-factor authentication can also be used to protect your non-CCA accounts (e.g., bank accounts, paypal, etc).

How will Duo change my login experience?

When logging in to an application that is protected by Duo (such as Workday), you will still enter your username and password. After inputting your login information, you will be required to complete a method of second-factor authentication. Duo does not replace or require you to change your username and password. Think of Duo as a layer of security added to your pre-existing login method.

This video demonstrates how the Duo mobile app is used to login with two-factor authentication enabled.
