FAQ - Faculty
Can I use VoiceThread in Safari?
Do not use the Safari browser for Moodle, Panopto, or VoiceThread as there are various problems related to access and functionality with these platforms when using Safari. We recommend using Firefox or Chrome for the best results.
Do I need to create a VoiceThread account?
All current students, faculty, and staff have access to VoiceThread and do not need to create a new account. Simply go to cca.voicethread.com and choose "Sign In" at the upper right to prompt the CCA Single Sign-On (SSO) page. Do not "register" as this will create a separate free account, lacking some of the options that may be needed for your courses and assignments.
I'm having trouble logging into VoiceThread.
If you're having trouble logging into cca.voicethread.com, try logging into Moodle, then click on the VoiceThread link in the resources block on the right hand side (you may need to click on the arrow to open the block drawer). If you continue to have trouble, try using Firefox or Chrome, or check that you have third-party cookies enabled in your browser.
How do I find my group in VoiceThread?
When you log in to cca.voicethread.com, you will be able to access your list of groups on the left side. In order to join a Group, you must either be added to that Group manually by the admin or invited to join. If you should be seeing a Group and do not, please contact your instructor or the person who created the Group, and ask them to invite you. If you receive a Group sign-up link, all you have to do is click on it in order to join.
Where is my Course on VoiceThread?
A Course group is automatically created when an instructor uses the External Tool to add VoiceThread to a Moodle course. Once you view the embedded VoiceThread, you'll automatically be added to the course group. The Course group will show up on the left side when you sign in to cca.voicethread.com.
I have a Google Slides/Keynote/PowerPoint presentation. Can I bring the slides into VoiceThread as individual images?
Yes! Upload the presentation into VoiceThread, and it will load each slide as a VoiceThread slide. If you experience any formatting issues, like strange fonts or layout, try converting the original presentation to a PDF, then upload it to VoiceThread again. You can change the order of slides once they're uploaded. Be aware that presentation notes, animations, links, and transitions will not appear in VoiceThread.
Why can't I comment on a video? I'm getting the message, "It looks like you're on a website that doesn't allow access to your microphone."
You may need to give VT access to your video and mic. Click the icon to the left of the URL in your browser address bar, and make sure your microphone is allowed for the VoiceThread website. Click here for step by step instructions.
Can I draw on a video or image that I've uploaded into VoiceThread?
Yes! You would upload the image or video, add an audio or video comment, then draw as you speak. Find more details here.
What is the best way for an instructor to invite their students to VoiceThread?
VoiceThread allows you and your students to connect, share, and create presentations within Moodle without having to log in separately to cca.voicethread.com.
By selecting VoiceThread or External Tool activity in Moodle, you're able to automatically create a Course folder in VoiceThread for you and your students. Your students can also create or add VTs to this specific activity or Course folder to share them with the class. For more information about this plugin, including how it can be used for assignments, check out the VoiceThread help documentation. For the purposes of the documentation, CCA does not use "Deep Linking."
Is closed captioning available for my VoiceThreads?
Machine-generated closed captioning is available to the creator or editor of a VoiceThread free of charge from VoiceThread until further notice. Please allow for approximately a week for processing time. More information can be found here.
