Part of event series: Oakland Campus Legacy Events

Legacy Print Project exhibition

Organized by

Oakland Campus Legacy Committee (OCLC)

Event description

Opening Reception
Wednesday, April 27, 5:30-7:30pm

To honor the historic Oakland campus as California College of the Arts moves toward unification in San Francisco, the Oakland Campus Legacy Committee (OCLC) is collaborating with alum and faculty emeritus Thomas Wojak to produce an edition of ten prints, each one representing a decade of CCA on the Oakland campus. The Treadwell Estate was purchased by CCA in 1922 and next year, 2022, marks exactly one hundred years on the site.

The series, entitled A Garden Campus, features prints that focus on notable aspects of the college over its one hundred years located on the Oakland Campus with throughlines that highlight the garden nature of the grounds, the significance of craft practices, and the enduring values of the college’s motto “Theory and Practice.” To represent a diverse cross section of the CCA community, ten current and former CCA faculty artists or artist teams have been invited to design one of the decade prints.

Project leads for the Legacy Print Project include Deborah Valoma (Professor and Chair, Textiles Program) Project Creator + Architect; Lisa Jonas (Director, Alumni Engagement, Advancement) Project Director; and Annemarie Haar (Associate Vice-President of Instructional Services) Project Archivist.

The second set of legacy prints will be revealed in the accompanying exhibition A Garden Campus Part II. Curated by Annemarie Haar, it features decade prints designed by Victoria Wagner (First Year Program)—1950s, Irene Cheng & Janette Kim (Architecture)—1960s, and Eduardo Pineda (Critical Ethnic Studies)—1970s, alongside ephemera from the CCA/C Archives that informed each design. A complete list of the artists can be found here.

The first six prints will be available, as well as reservations for box sets of the full edition, at the opening reception (The first three released in the fall are available now here). All proceeds from the Legacy Print Project will go toward funding Oakland Campus Legacy programming and projects.

OCLC will host an opening reception for the exhibition and to celebrate the launch of the second set of prints as part of The Last Wednesday Night on Wednesday April 27, 5:30-7:30pm.
