Event Title, Date, Time, + Location

Last updated on Sep 01, 2020

Title

What it says on the tin. On the published page, the title displays at the top in big, capital letters, and it is also the most prominent text on the Portal Events Calendar search results.

Choose your title wisely! A unique, specific title will be helpful to users in search, but it will also make your event easier to keep track of as an editor.

Your event title determines the page's URL, as in portal.cca.edu/events-calendar/title. If you change your event's title after initially publishing it, you'll need to unpublish and republish the page before the URL will update!

Here's how Title looks in Wagtail:

Start/End

Specify start date and start time for your event as well as end date and end time.

  • When you click on the text field for date or time, a calendar or a menu of times pop up, respectively. Simply click on the day to enter a date, and click on a time to select a start time.

  • Times are on a 24-hour clock, and you’re not constrained to just using the dropdown options. Feel free to click a time to pick the hour, then change the minutes to whatever you’d like for your start time.

  • You can enter info manually using the following formats:
    • Dates: YYYY-MM-DD
    • Times: HH:MM (again, note it uses a 24-hour clock)
  • Improperly formatted input will revert to the current date or time

Location

Here, you’ll enter the address where your event will be held. Enter the details as described next to each text box.

The first field, Location, has a dropdown selection list. This is used for a search filter on the Events Calendar and appears in the event's results listing.

In-Person Events

The San Francisco and Oakland filters do not necessarily mean your event will be on-campus but simply within the specified city. Select Other for in-person events occurring elsewhere.

Virtual and Hybrid Events

For events held only online or remotely, select Virtual, while events that can be attended either in-person or virtually (or have both an online and an in-person component) should be marked Hybrid.

Location Display

Location information doesn't display in full in Events Calendar results (simply the info from the Location dropdown), but full location details are viewable on the Event page itself, alongside the other date and time information you have provided.

Events with Physical Locations

  • The Portal Location format will appear as Room | Street Address, City, State Zipcode, Country
  • When you enter an address in Wagtail, a View map link autogenerates on the Portal Event page, pointing to the specified address in Google Maps!
    • Room information will not populate in the Google Maps link.

Events with Virtual Locations

  • Virtual events will display the online platform and the external link to the virtual event, if specified.
Google Maps Location

Featured Events on the Portal Home Page

The next two upcoming events display on Portal's home page. These event tiles will not display full location details, though they will include the Google Maps link for in-person or hybrid events, or the external link for virtual events.

Add to Calendar Function

Add to Calendar Button - Events Page

You can easily add a published event to your Google calendar with the Add to calendar functionality. On an event's Portal page, it takes the form of a link and icon beside the event title, as well as in the Portal Events Calendar (though it won't display on events on Portal's homepage).

Click the link to open a Google calendar event.

  • For events with a physical location, the Google Calendar Location field will take Street Address, City, State, and Zipcode information from the Wagtail Event page. Room information will appear in the Google Calendar event Description, along with a link to the event's page in Portal.
  • For virtual events, the Online Platform and External Link will appear in the Google Calendar Description field.
