Event description

Lecture recordings will be made available for educational purposes to the CCA community on Panopto.

The Spring 2022 Design Lecture Series will be available both in person, and online. If you’d like to attend in-person, advanced ticketing is required. See each event for our COVID-19 policies. To attend virtually, please RSVP for the Zoom Webinar link.

The Design Lecture Series reflects CCA Design’s commitment to being a sanctuary for emerging voices and diverse practices. Each semester we host a powerful slate of thinkers and practitioners who expand our idea of what design is and what design can do.

For the Spring 2022 Design Lecture Series we bring back over 15 CCA alumni (and one special guest – Andrew McLuhan) to share their design strategies and stories of success. Most of the events are structured as dialogues or conversations focused around the speaker’s lived experiences:  being the first, or only, designer in an organization; pushing for sustainability as an interdisciplinary team at Nike; the reality of professional detours; building a new platform to grow digital connections and community; and designing for ambiguity, coziness and more.

We hope you’ll join us for one, or all of these critical conversations.

Design Lecture Series Identity by GRL GRP
GRL GRP is the collective design practice of Ashlyn Jackson, Abigayle Cosinuke, Rebecca Gardea, Chloe Looker, Meg Quarton and Sarah Chieko Bonnickson. Together, we encourage one another to keep making, inspire new work, gain recognition for our work by sharing a platform and new opportunities. GRL GRP is womxn started and feminist-inspired. We strive to carve out space in the design world for ourselves and have fun doing it.

Exploring Crafts:
For the Spring 2022 Design Lecture Series, GRL GRP wanted to go back to the root of CCA. Since all of the speaker are alumni of CCA, we thought it would be great to take a look at CCA, and before CCA there was CCAC (California College of the Arts and Crafts). Crafts are the root foundation when it comes to working with art and design and the GRLs were interested in exploring crafts that have been tied mainly to women, such as working with textiles. From quilting and weaving to pattern making and embroidery, women have experimented and pushed the creative boundaries that this medium could be. The textile patterns used in this year's Design Lecture Series were compiled from textiles found around our homes and then taken on formal exploration in order to create a new textile pattern on its own. The patterns were made digitally and the type was then woven in by hand to blend the two different mediums of digital and physical.

All fonts used were designed by women.
