Graduate Studio Assistants in Studio Operations

Last updated on Mar 25, 2024

Graduate Studio Assistants (GSAs) are contributing members of the Studio Operations team that supports and supervises the California College of the Arts’ making facilities. The GSA works with the studio staff to foster an open, accessible and safe learning and making environment through patience, excellent communication skills, and an ongoing willingness to seek out new areas of expertise on behalf of the community and themselves. Under the supervision of studio managers, GSAs assist with supervising shop and studio spaces by helping students and faculty during open studio hours. Other duties may include: ensuring safe use of facilities and equipment; guiding students and faculty in fabrication skills and techniques; care and operation of studio equipment; management of studio materials; updating instructional resources and documentation; leading technical demonstrations; completing special projects as needed. GSAs are expected to demonstrate and uphold best practices in professional studio culture, health, and safety for all users.

GSAs have the opportunity to learn from program chairs, faculty and studio management how professional studios in higher education institutions are managed, how pedagogy is embedded within shops and studios, and how adherence to health and safety regulations improves the user experience.

General Expectations:

  • Day-to-day management will be coordinated by the Studio Manager.
  • GSAs will set their schedule with studio management staff at the beginning of each semester.
  • Training in health and safety regulations will be offered to ensure safety standards are being met.
  • As employees of CCA, GSAs may work with sensitive information and are expected to maintain confidentiality.
