RECOGNIZING LATINX AND HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Observed September 15 through October 15, Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the history, diverse cultures, traditions, contributions, and resilience of communities whose ancestry is linked to Indigenous and immigrant peoples in Mexico, the Caribbean, Spain, and Central and South America.

The first nationally recognized heritage observation came in 1968 with a week-long commemoration. This was expanded in 1988 to a month. September 15 is significant because it is Independence Day for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, while Mexico celebrates independence on September 16 and Chilé on September 18. Indigenous People’s Day and Día de la Raza (replacing Columbus Day) are celebrated during this time–which acknowledges the Indigenous heritage that exists within many Latina/e/o/x histories, cultures, and traditions.

The national theme for 2024 pays tribute to the many individuals who pave the way for future generations to enact change. In California, Latina/e/o/x and Hispanic communities represent our largest ethnic group–with diverse roots throughout the globe. The activism and advocacy within Latinx/Chicanx communities have provided a platform for securing opportunities for everyone who pursues a life and an education in the United States.

CCA would like to honor and acknowledge heritage months with additional campus resources on the Heritage Month Portal.

Questions? Please contact diversity@cca.edu.

LONG LOST

Long Lost, an exhibition curated by Giorgie O'Keeffe DePaolis (Visual and Critical Studies 2025), reconciles the work of past and present students, transforming the gallery into a homecoming venue. The reunion inspires questions of memory, distortion, home, inaccessibility, and distance. As a composed exhibit, works from current students and alumni complicate interpretations about childhood, family, safety, and collective experience. This refusal of neat returns and easy answers reflects the precariousness of pasts, homes, and histories.

  • Long Lost (In Person)
    • ON VIEW: Sunday, September 22, 2024 – Sunday, October 20, 2024 (THIS MONTH & NEXT MONTH!)
    • FEATURED ARTISTS: Current students Angela Zamora, Haley Mae, and Eve; CCA alums Narges Poursadeqi, Djinnaya Stroud, and Ashley Martin-Prideaux
    • RECEPTION: Saturday, October 19, 2024 | 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
